Christine joined us at Chanctonbury Leisure Centre in early January 2023, after undergoing an operation in February 2022. This was no “standard” operation though – Christine underwent a full spinal reconstruction / spinal fusion from shoulder to pelvis. This was to correct a lifelong condition bought about by Scheuermann’s Disease which causes the vertebrae to grow unevenly.
Post operation Christine has been undergoing intensive physiotherapy both in hospital and with a Community Physiotherapist. Christine was advised by her medical team to extend her exercise into a gym routine and recommended Chanctonbury’s Exercise on Referral Scheme.
Christine is now into her 5th week and under the guidance of our fantastic instructor, Vicky, is already achieving amazing results.
Christine says that “I can already feel the benefits. I can feel that I have more flexibility, more mobility and definitely more muscle strength which is helping me in everyday life. I can now do the things that people often take for granted but that I could not do before starting at the gym. I can reach up to my top kitchen cabinet, I can change my own bed linen and can push my own shopping trolley.
“All these things are absolute game changers for me. It may take some time to return to full fitness but I am doing it and I am making progress every day. Vicky has been fantastic at the Centre and, in truth, all of the staff have been so supportive.
“Everyone always asks how I am and makes me feel so special on every visit. Nothing seems to be too much trouble and nobody in the Centre ever judges you – they really are so friendly and offer the personal touch. I am so pleased to be a member here. If you are thinking of coming to the gym but don’t think that you can do it then, believe me, you can! “
