A craving is marked by a strong desire for a specific type of food. Depending on your mood or palate, that food might be sweet, savoury, creamy, crispy, or a combination of.
First thing first: cravings are entirely normal, and often fun when indulged mindfully. However, it is when cravings begin to derail your health and fitness goals regularly that we must investigate whether they happen for reasons other than pure physical hunger. The next time you experience a food craving, pause for a moment, and bring awareness to your triggers by asking the following questions: What thoughts am I having? Who am I with? Where am I? The answers may help you to notice a relationship between your dietary urges and your environment, company, and emotions – information that can be leveraged to build manageable alternative behaviours and habits that make change feel more achievable. Information is power, after all. And if ultimately, you determine that a particular craving isn’t detrimental to your health or mindset, you don’t need to change a thing!
